NEW DRAFT EIA 2020 ASSESSMENT

WHAT IS EIA?

EIA means environmental impact assessment is a process or study which predicts the effect of a proposed industrial/infrastructural project on the environment. It prevents the proposed activity/project from being approved without proper oversight or taking adverse consequences into account.

So whichever manufacture company entering India or any company from India wants to implant a manufacturing unit in India. It should get permission from the Indian environment protection authority, Indiansafeland council, Indian pollution control, sustainable development authorities they would undergo deep auditing on the documents submitted by the company officers. The main role EIA is an industry in an area should not affect livelihood and environment near or around it.

DOES OTHER COUNTRIES PRACTICE EIA?

Around the world, more than 100 countries (both developed and developing ) practising EIA control for more than 50 years. It's a very good policy to follow for sustainable development and environment protection.

IS EIA NEW TO INDIA?

No, EIA falls under the environment
protection act of 1986, and India notified EIA norms in 1994 till 2004 is was maintained perfectly.

WHAT ARE THE EIA 2020 STATEMENTS?

  • EIA assessment falls mining of coal/ other minerals.
  • Infrastructure development
  • Thermal, nuclear, hydropower plants
  • Real estate and other industrial projects.
India notified the first EIA norms in 4, A  draft was introduced in EIA 2020. Which is been controversial for the past few days. Many social experts and environmental scientist gave out their support to the withdrawal of EIA.

WHY THIS EIA  2020 IS CRITICISED?

Because of the many changes in the rules and violations. firstly the EIA 2020 allows post-facto clearance. Which allows the industry to expand its unit at the construction of industry with the same permit when it is given at the start of the project by the Indian government officials.

And EIA has a list of projects exempted from the assessment. any project that the government categorizes as strategic. Once the project considers as strategic no information will be released to the public hence the industry resource capturing information, pollution rate, the heat emitting limits. Its precautions and waste management will not be announced to the public or nearby living citizens.

All the inland waterways and national highway projects are excluded from this act.

The construction project can be up to 1,50,000 sqm. violation can only be reported by two:
  1. Team project officials
  2. government officers.
From 1994 to 2004 this act was perfectly followed. Since to eradicate unemployment and poverty crisis this act was drafted since 2004. From then till now this act was drafted. So only many mnc companies were entered into India due to low restriction. Especially India allowed only chemical and pharmaceuticals for more employment and then real estate.

Even though we lost 85% of our local waterways.  Water is so polluted than ever.  Resources were depicted, 28%  of land surfaces are covered by only the mining and the gas industries.

Recent gas leakages in Vishakapatnam, Andhra Pradesh leads to 12 dead. And LG polymers said it was an unexpected accident hence they won't take any resonbilties on this accident. But the unit is running for 2 decades without any maintenance and auditing by government officials. The social experts put down a case on LG on this but this tragedy happened 10 days before the hearing.

Gas is blown out in tinkuskia , Assam has affected nearby environment and people. Allowing this implement will lead to more accidents and deads. Generally acts like this will be given a 30 days time to the public to accept or to deny it. But for this act, only 20 days is given which is not sufficient time to reach tribal and rural areas. Hence we should act fast against this act to save our environment and resource for our future.
The mining industry needs at least 5 years to build but only 30 days is given for billions of peoples in India for making the decision.

The public feedback now has been extended till August 11, 2020, by Delhi high court.
act fast
