ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENT AND ITS USES

If you’ve watched the famous animation movie “Kung-Fu Panda”, you might have come across the term “Acupuncture”, where Mantis the grasshopper treats the Panda Po with needles to rid of his body pains. Mantis will be able to control the other body parts of the panda Po by triggering some points in the Panda’s body. Also, in the movie “Kung Fu Panda 2”, the Fortune-teller will treat the injured Panda with needles.

Acupuncture - An Ancient healing method

But how can a person be relieved just by placing needles all over his body? What is the scientific fact behind this treatment? What are its benefits?

All these questions are well answered by an Acupuncturist. I’m sure you will not regret reading this post about one of the greatest treatment methods, the Acupuncture.

HISTORY OF ACUPUNCTURE
Acupuncture is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It came into existence during 2596 B.C and it has been in practice till now, for nearly 4614 years. It was found during the reign of Huang-Di, who was also called as yellow emperor. It was during his reign when acupuncture was introduced and thrived globally.

APPROVAL BY WHO

We all know that acupuncture has been in practice since ancient times. But to continue the method in this scientific era, there should be a documented scientific explanation for the treatment.

Acupuncture gets RECOGNISED
In order for a medical treatment to be practiced worldwide or a protocol for treating a patient is made, first it has to be recognized and approved by World Health Organization (WHO). Recognition from WHO is possible only by demonstrating controlled clinical trials, proofs, evidence, results, benefits of the treatment procedure etc. Once a treatment method gets approved by fulfilling all the required demands, it gets approval and recognition from WHO and thus it can be practiced worldwide.
Acupuncture got recognized by World Health Organization in the year 1960. After WHO officially recognized acupuncture, it started to spread all over the world. Due to its extraordinary results in curing specific conditions, diseases and symptoms, it began to popularize and thus been a most sought alternative method of treatment. According to World Health Organization, acupuncture can successfully treat, cure, aid and alleviate symptoms and can be used as an appropriate treatment for more than 50 conditions, including certain digestive, respiratory, neurological, muscular, urinary, menstrual and reproductive disorders. According to a recent study conducted by a doctor in Chinese acupuncture clinical research centre, acupuncture can cure 461 diseases.

METHOD or SCIENTIFIC FACT BEHIND ACUPUNCTURE
The treatment usually involves inserting very fine sterile acupuncture needles over specific acupuncture points which are spread all over the body. The depth and duration of needle to be in the place depend on the condition for which a patient is treated. For example, to eliminate or reduce pain, inflammation etc. the needles are inserted in the specific acupuncture points which are near the anatomical location. When the needle is inserted, it causes a minute trauma which in turn triggers body’s natural pain killers or endorphin which in turn reduces or eliminates the pain. In case of treating diseases like diabetes, the needles were inserted at specific acupuncture points, which tend to increase the function of pancreas which in turn increases the insulin production and decreases the blood glucose level. Similarly, there are many specific scientifically proven acupuncture points, which when stimulated increases or decreases the function.

TYPES OF ACUPUNCTURE

1.Body acupuncture
It is the most common type of acupuncture. It involves insertion of very fine needles into various acupuncture points in the Body. Each point has different therapeutic effect. The points spread literally from head to toe. This is used to treat most of the condition.

2.Auricular acupuncture
According to TCM, Acupuncture points representing all body parts are present in the ear. So, these points may be stimulated by using tiny press needles, which are very minute. Thus, it involves application of needles or pressure in the ear to cure illness related to other parts of the body.

3.Electro-acupuncture
This method is used in conjunction with body acupuncture. Here, electro acupuncture machine is connected to the top of the body acupuncture needles. The needles are then stimulated using electric current. This method is used particularly in painful conditions.

4.Acupressure
This is where the acupuncture needles are pressed by acupuncturist in treating certain condition. The acupuncturist may help the patient to locate the key point and teach them how to apply pressure at such points.

Other types of acupuncture are:

5.Magnets and acupuncture
This is where magnets are placed over acupuncture points so that the magnetic waves trigger the acupuncture spots.

6.Moxibustion and acupuncture
This is where small number of herbs are attached to the top of needle and lighted.

7.Heat treatment and acupuncture
Heat lamps are placed over acupuncture needles.

8.Cupping and acupuncture
This is where glass cups or bamboo are used in conjunction with acupuncture.

USES
Some of the diseases, conditions and symptoms, which can be cured by acupuncture are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, high blood pressure, low back pain, sciatica, allergic rhinitis, leucopenia, asthma, colitis, paralysis, foot drop, frozen shoulder and other diseases and symptoms. It also acts as immune enhancer

CONCLUSION
Acupuncture is a promising alternative method of treatment, which cures many specific diseases, symptoms and conditions.
