BE SURE OF WHAT YOU STORE IN A COPPER VESSEL

We have heard many stories on how a food is affected by the layer in which it is stored. You can check the hazard of the LDPE coating in paper cup in this blog too.

But have you ever heard that the vessel which was made from a metal, which is the base for the science of metallurgy and used by people for several centuries is also not suitable for certain foods? Guess what…. The metal is Copper which was discovered back in 8700B.C. and the foods that decay are the ones which has acidic compound in it and a great example is Curd.

This is the most controversial topic on copper and its vessels as they are used for centuries mainly to store liquids. Naturally the curd contains lactic acid in it. When it is kept in copper container, the acid present in the curd starts to react with the copper metal and forms a salt by releasing hydrogen gas.
Consuming the salt will lead to food poisoning, abdominal pain, hemolysis, anemia, jaundice and shock etc. Not only curd, any other food item like tamarind which is slightly acidic in nature will react with copper and forms harmful product.
But compared to plastic vessels and aluminum vessels, Copper vessels have many beneficial qualities like it

  1. Kills bacteria
  2. Aids digestion
  3. Helps in Anti-ageing and boosts skin health
  4. Aids weight loss
  5. Promotes heart health
  6. Acts as a Strong anti-inflammation agent
  7. Combats thyroid
  8. Promotes healing

How to stop this poisoning reaction??

Tin coating should be given to the inner side of copper vessels. After coating it, any type of food substances can be stored in copper vessels. But the coating process should be done once in a year.

Thus, lead a healthy lifestyle by understanding the simple science in each and every process.
