We are feeling extremely happy as this is our 50th post. We thank every reader for your constant support which helped us achieve this feat.
We have
successfully stepped into the last month of the year 2020 and are about to
enter into 2021 in a few days. Nearly, all western countries experience the
winter season during this tenure. During the winter season, we would take
necessary precautions like drinking warm water, wearing sweaters/coats, etc. to
keep us warm. But there are certain other aspects which we have to take care
of. This post clearly describes the impact of winter on your skin and nose with
its preventive measures.

CHANGE IN
THE ENVIRONMENT DURING WINTER
We may
think that the air during the winter season will hold much more moisture than
summer air. But it is not so. The air tends to be so much drier than ever
during the winter season. This is because warm air can hold much moisture but
cold air cannot. Also, the temperature of the atmosphere gets reduced. That’s
why countries in the polar region use heat pumps during winter.
WHAT
HAPPENS TO OUR SKIN DURING WINTER?
During
winter, the temperature in the atmosphere will be low and the humidity level
will be less. Due to less humidity, the outer layer of the skin will become
dry. We usually take hot showers during winter to keep us warm. This further
affects the skin and leads to cracks on the skin surface. These cracks intensify
when soap and other dry substances get rubbed against them.
Normally, in warmer seasons, the oil glands in
our skin’s exterior surface will secrete oils and sebum, which traps the
moisture content within the skin. In the winter season, the efficiency of these
glands gets reduced, resulting in lesser secretion of oil.
TIPS TO
PREVENT WINTER RASH AND DRYNESS
- Moisturize yourself regularly using mild creams. Moisturizers are the emulsions that contain oil and water in the ratio 4:1. This will mimic the activity done by the oil glands in our skin thus retaining the skin’s moisture level.
- Don’t take hot showers. Hot showers will increase the internal temperature of the body and leads to skin cracks. Try a moderate or cold shower. Also, don’t take long showers.
- It is better to avoid soaps as they are hard. Also, they intensify the cracks in the skin.
- Use liquid cleansing solutions (Lotions) instead of dry soaps.
- Wear clothes that are manufactured from your skin-friendly materials.
RUNNY NOSE
DURING WINTER
Winter and
Runny nose are an evergreen couple that has a never-ending story between them.
The nose is a vital part of the respiratory system because it is the pathway
for air(oxygen) to enter our lungs. During the winter season, the air will be
cold and dry. This cold-dry air when reaches the nose, leads to the expansion
of vessels in the nasal cavity. This leads to the secretion of mucus which
causes a “runny nose.” The mucus secretion is done to warm up the nasal
environment. We often forget the “warming up of air by the nose”, which is one
of the important functions of the nose.
TIPS TO
COMBAT RUNNY NOSE
- To avoid a runny nose, all you have to do is to inhale warm air.
- Wearing a scarf will help you prevent a runny nose as it warms up the air before reaching into your nose.
- Don’t take any medicines without a doctor’s prescription.
CONCLUSION
This year
2020 has taught us a valuable lesson that “Health comes First.” So, we must
maintain our body’s health. By following these tips, you can effectively battle
against Skin hardness and Runny nose during the winter season.
