Ever had dreams turned into real-life experiences? Felt that you were in this same place and condition? We have all come across such experiences at least once or felt deja-vu. So what exactly are these and how does the exact thing happen to us as we dreamt it?
Precognitive dreams-
These are dreams in which we experience certain events or foresee certain incidents happening to us or the people around us. Throughout centuries, many names have been given for these dreams such as prophecies, fortune-telling, and even Astrology. These dreams although not fully remembered by the dreamer in certain instances, will be remembered once the event happens, producing a sense of familiarity for the person.
Precognitive or also called psychic dreams, not only causes the dreamer to see the instances but can also make the dreamer feel in that instance. There are various popular cases regarding the truth of Precognitive dreams such as Abraham Lincoln’s death, the 9/11 attack, and many more. Although it can happen to everyone, not everyone experiences such dreams, and even science can support proof of this topic.
Why science can’t support Precognitive dreams-
Psychic dreams are a part of pseudoscience because they cannot be explained by science. It violates the natural law of casualty that a cause is the reason for the effect and effect cannot happen before cause.
By physics, particles traveling back in time can only carry information, which such dreams violate.
In psychiatry, such dreams cannot be supported by beliefs and tests because it involves telepathic effects.
Finally, many experiments have been conducted to find out about such dreams, but no evidence has thus been provided.
Are Precognitive dreams dangerous?
No, these are nothing but dreams that are stimulated mainly due to the various factors and effects. Although they can cause stress and seriousness for certain human beings, most people don’t remember the event until it actually happens.
What are the possible reasons?
Although there are various speculations and ideas about these dreams they cannot be supported by both science and superstition. Some of these are-
Research-
Selective recall- Selective recall is the method that you’ll more likely remember dreams that predict the future than those that do not. Our brain focuses on the particular portion of the dream relative to the whole dream that is possible when the event occurs.
Imagine in your dream that you’re running around the house and have stumbled and fallen down. In the future when you fall down in the house even for other reasons, our brain remembers the particular portion and emotion of falling rather than the whole dream.
Coincidence- Our life is nothing but an infinite set of possibilities. On average, a person dreams 15-40% of the time during sleep. So some dreams can turn out to happen in real life out of these possibilities. But does this support the theory, because it happens for at least 1/3rd of the population as per studies, and many times for a person over his lifetime?
Deja-vu- It is the method that the brain conjures up false memory of the vision, before the happening of the actual event. Although it is not exactly a dream, can create the effects of Psychic dreams.
Subconscious connections- These are dreams that arise due to feelings, issues, or other factors that you have heard or felt. These can significantly influence a person because the feeling is stemmed into the person before the actual event happens.
Imagine you have a reunion with your friends next month and you have a precognitive dream about its happening. The dream arises due to the feeling of the reunion significantly building the dream.
Cause-effect- Although not specifically explained or researched, this also arises due to various factors. Your dream can influence you towards a particular event or happening that may be the dream itself.
Supernatural-
Many people have superstitious beliefs about these dreams. They think that these are gifts from a higher power, and the ability to do out-of-ordinary things even procure themselves at a divine state. Many people use these dreams to say prophecies and fortune-telling and have been carried over centuries. But the hard truth is that even beliefs and superstition can’t provide a reason for such happening.
Beyond science-
We have to admit that these dreams are beyond science, at least for now. Some understanding that can be sought is-
Conscious-time relation- We all believe that time moves through space and even consciousness (life). But in reality, every object moves through time, and the difference between past, present, and future is nothing but a perspective of time. Consciousness being projected across time can provide plausible reasons for such dreams.
Brain capacity- The full capacity of the brain can do wonders, or so the researchers believe. At higher brain functions, telepathy is possible I.e transmitting brain signals. So, a better understanding of brain functioning and capacity is needed to bring about proper research and proof for these dreams.
Science can’t prove what these dreams are nor how they predict the future, continuous research is being done to understand them. Maybe, the future can hold answers for such dreams and even use them properly.
